The hills are alive

Today, Nandu had arranged for us to see 4 different properties as possible locations for children's homes. I would have to say that it was exhausting physically and a little discouraging. Exhausting in that we were around Dello mountain, about 5,000 feet above sea level and we were hiking up and down the mountain to see the land. In the midwest, flat land is the norm, but here, to find a piece of flat land to build on is a commodity that comes with a hefty price tag. As you think of us, pray that we will be wise in our decisions and that God would direct us to the right place at the right price.

There are animals everywhere. We saw monkeys on the road from Siliguri to Kalimpong. And there are cows, pigs, chickens, roosters, dogs and goats roaming everywhere. Here are a few of the vegetation maintenance workers on one of the properties we looked at.

Tomorrow we travel to Darjeeling to visit a tea plantation and take in the sights. We'll spend a day there, stay overnight and then head back to Kpong. Sam Van Voorhis will be leaving the team and flying out of Darjeeling to the US.

We found out that an internet cable had been stolen from the outside of our hotel in Kpong. That's why we've had so much trouble connecting. They had it replaced, so hopefully John and the others will be able to update their blogs.

This is the off season in Kalimpong, so we pretty much have the hotel to ourselves. Nandu orders our dinner each night and the hotel kitchen staff cook it specifically for us since there aren't any other hotel guests. So far we've had alot of chicken curry and rice. Yesterday at lunch I accidentally ate a couple of really hot peppers. For those of you who know me well, you know that my face sweats profusely when I eat something spicey. The rest of the team just laughed at me, they're not a very sympathetic bunch. =)

Fortunately, John is an excellent photographer and writer. Here are a couple pics he's taken. Check out his director's blog for more.

This is Merina. One of the little girls at Kalimpong 1

A street in Kalimpong with a Scooby Doo Van at the end.

1-17  I enjoy marsala chai tea!  The team met for breakfast and further discussed the future expansion of AH in India.

We stopped at K1 to visit the kids and Jordan and Ruth (House parents).  Again - I'm very impressed with the caliber of this couple and their love and care for the kids.  Although they 2 of their own you'd never know.

The environment is cramped but clean.  There is limited space for the kids to play.  The kids sang - Lord I Lift Your Name on High and Be Bold be Strong for the Lord your God is with you!
